The Dominican University men's volleyball team, ranked 15
th in the latest AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Poll, knocked off the 12
th-ranked NYU Violets in four sets (23-22, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22) on Tuesday night in the Igini Sports Forum.
"The boys played well," said
Dan Ames, the Stars' third-year head coach, following the match. "We played disciplined and they bought in to what our philosophy is…that defense creates offense. We can't complain with the outcome tonight at all."
For the match, the Stars hit .302 paced by
Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and
Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) who knocked down 18 and 15 kills respectively. Junior setter
Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) doled out 46 assists while utilizing five different attackers including
Robert Mead (Darien, Ill.) and
Adam Eboli (Melrose Park, Ill.) who added seven and six kills respectively.
Defensively, the Stars dug 42 attacks and posted nine total blocks to hold the Violets to a .273 attack percentage.
Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) led the back row effort with a match-high 15 digs while Spicer rounded out his third double-double of the season with ten digs. At the net, Royko collected three solo blocks while Eboli had one solo and two assisted blocks.
The Stars, now 15-7 overall, return to the court on Friday, hosting the Benedictine University Eagles in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) matchup at 7:00 p.m.
