The Dominican University men's volleyball team split a pair of matches against ranked opponents on Saturday afternoon in New Paltz, New York, topping the #15 Juniata College Eagles in four sets (25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18) before getting swept by the second-ranked SUNY New Paltz Hawks (25-16, 25-19, 25-21). The split pushes the Stars to 11-5 overall, including a 3-2 mark against the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15.
Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) led the Stars' offense to a .291 attack percentage while dishing out 28 assists.
Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and
Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) paced the attack with 11 kills apiece while
Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) added ten kills in the winning effort.
Defensively, Dominican's block led the charge, posting 9.5 total blocks. Solbrig rounded out hit team-high 14.5 points with five total blocks while Spicer added four. In the back row, Dominican needed just 24 digs as the Eagles hit just .157, committing 24 attack errors.
In the nightcap, the Hawks, 17-2 and riding a 15-match winning streak, logged a .500 hitting percentage as they knocked down 48 kills while committing just ten errors on 76 total attempts. Joe Norman and Steven Woessner led the attack with 16 and ten kills respectively.
For the Stars, Royko and Spicer shared team-high honors for the Stars with eight kills apiece as Dominican managed a .222 hitting percentage.
The Stars continue their East Coast trip, heading to New Jersey on Sunday to take on Ramapo College and Kean University before closing out the trip at Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday.
