Stars Suffer NACC Setbacks

The Dominican University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Monday afternoon at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium, dropping game one 3-1 behind a complete-game outing from sophomore right-hander Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) before game two slipped away, 12-10.

"Game one was a good baseball game but unfortunately we came out on the wrong end of it," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' fifth-year head coach. "We had a good opportunity late with bases loaded and our four, five and six hitters coming up and we came up empty.  That was an opportunity for us to jump ahead late in the game.  Game two was encouraging that we went down 5-0, came back, gained the lead, lost the lead and came back again before going down late.  We need to bounce back tomorrow and look to sweep to split the weekend."

With the losses, the Stars fall to 9-13 on the season and 3-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with a conference series with the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on the slate for Tuesday afternoon at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.

Game One:  Concordia Wisconsin 3, Dominican 1

A leadoff walk, a double and a single led to two first inning runs for the Falcons who managed just three hits the rest of the game but scored just enough to pick up the win.

The Stars pulled within a run, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth when Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) pulled a one-out single to left.  A hit batter and a single later, Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, Ill.) knocked in the Stars' lone run when the sophomore drove the first hit he saw to centerfield for a sac fly.

Dominican's offense did not threaten again until the bottom of the eighth when Janison, Brian Costello (Norridge, Ill.) and Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) strung together three singles to load the bases with nobody out.  After a brief visit at the mound, Andrew Heideman settled down and struck out McKinney before getting the Stars' Mike Piotrowski (Arlington Heights, Ill.) to pop out in the infield and then escaped the inning when JT Hicks (Albion, Mich.) grounded softly to second.

Heideman then worked a one-two-three ninth for his first save of the season.

Janison was tagged with the loss for the Stars, allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out six over nine innings of work.

Offensively, the Stars outhit the Falcons, 7-5, including a 2-for-4 game for Schuster with a pair of singles.

Game Two: Concordia Wisconsin 12, Dominican 10

Trailing 6-1 after two and a half innings, the Stars scored six unanswered runs, taking a 7-6 lead on Schuster's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth only to see the Falcons rally for two runs and reclaim the lead, 8-7 in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dominican loaded the bases for Costello who delivered with a single to right-center to knock in two runs and Janison crossed on the play when the Falcons' throw in from the outfield was offline.

The Falcons battled back for two in the top of the seventh to even the game at 10-10 and then plated the winning runs in the top of the eighth, stringing together three hits to take a 12-10 lead.

Chance Emlund (Chicago, III.) took the loss out of the bullpen, surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings.
