Offense Rallies As Stars Salvage Split With Muskies

After the Dominican University softball team managed just four hits in a 9-1 loss in game one of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader with the Lakeland College Muskies on Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Rosemont, the Dominican University offense exploded for ten runs on 14 hits in a 10-7 win in game two.  The twinbill split for the Stars pushed the team's overall record to 13-7 and their NACC record to 3-1.

Dominican will be back in action early Monday morning, hosting the Marian University Sabres for a reschedule of Saturday's NACC series that was postponed due to the wet, cold weather that has blanketed the Midwest this spring.  First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

Game One: Lakeland 9, Dominican 1 (5 Inn.)

Dominican's sophomore lefty Michele Behrens (Frankfort, Ill.) lasted just two-plus innings as the Muskies roughed up Behrens for three runs on five hits and two walks including a long two-run home run by Angela Tribuzio that ended the day for Behrens.

The change in the circle did not effect the Muskies' offense much as Lakeland continued to knock around Dominican's Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.), breaking open the game and touching Locher for six runs on nine hits and two walks to put the Stars away in five innings.

The lone run Dominican managed off of Taylor Bush who tossed a complete-game four hitter for the Muskies, came in the bottom of the third when Marissa Burns (Shorewood, Ill.) flew out to left field with the bases loaded to score Armani Procter who singled to start the frame.

In taking the loss, Behrens falls to 3-4 on the season.

Game Two:  Dominican 10, Lakeland 7

Dominican University's Olivia Babusci (Park Ridge, Ill.) picked up her first win of the season, tossing five-plus innings and leaving with a 10-5 lead before Sydney Kuderna (Naperville, Ill.) got the final six outs for the Stars in the win.  Babusci limited the Muskies to six earned runs on ten hits and two walks while Kuderna surrendered just two hits while working the final two innings.

The Stars' offense staked Babusci to an early lead when Gabby Curran (Elmhurst, Ill.) started the bottom of the first with a single to right.  After a sacrifice bunt and a flyout, Curran was knocked in when Ali Woitovich (Downers Grove, Ill.) roped the first of her two triples in the game.

Dominican added to the lead in the second, scoring six times on five hits.  Freshman Abby Maike (Savanna, Ill.) plated Catherine Conte (Elmwood Park, Ill.) when she tripled to the gap in left-center.  Maike then crossed with Curran singled in the Stars' next at-bat.  Then after a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Woitovich cleared the bases with her second triple of the game.  Alyssa Domico (Naperville, Ill.) followed with a single of her own to score Woitovich.

After Lakeland got two runs back in the top of the third, Dominican scored the next three runs, including an RBI single by Curran in the bottom of the third and an RBI single by Gabi Alfaro (Aurora, Ill.) in the bottom of the fourth as the Stars opened a 10-2 lead.

Lakeland tried to claw their way back into the game but Kuderna was able to slam the door, retiring six of the ten hitters she faced.
