Stars Shut Down Warriors

The Dominican University softball team swept a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader from the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, taking game one 4-1 before routing the Warriors in game two by a score of 10-1.

Sydney Kuderna (Naperville, Ill.) picked up the game one victory, limiting the Warriors to one run on seven hits, to move to 10-1 on the season before Michele Behrens (Frankfort, Ill.) tossed a complete-game in game two, holding the Warriors to just one run on three hits.

With the wins, the Stars stand at 21-11 on the season and 11-5 in conference play. Dominican will be back in action on Sunday, hosting the Alverno College Inferno for a twinbill at the Ballpark at Rosemont.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

Game One: Dominican 4, Wisconsin Lutheran 1

Gabby Curran (Elmhurst, Ill.) singled in the top of the third to plate Kuderna who doubled to left-center to start the inning and Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.) plated a run in the top of the fifth as the Stars staked Kuderna to a 2-0 lead through 4.5 innings.

The Warriors cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth when Abby Mahsem and Abby Akright roped back-to-back doubles to start the inning before the freshman used a double play to end the threat and escape the inning with the lead intact.

In the sixth, Kuderna reached for the second time in the game, ripping a one-out single to right.  Hausl then plated her second run of the game when she singled after a Warrior error extended the inning.

Kuderna then stranded two runners in each the sixth and seventh for the Warriors to secure win after an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

The top three in the Dominican lineup, Curran, Hausl and Marissa Burns (Shorewood, Ill.), had two hits apiece as Dominican pounded out 12 hits in the win.

Kuderna scattered seven hits over the seven innings, minimizing the damage with just one walk while allowing the defense to work behind her.

Game Two: Dominican 10, Wisconsin Lutheran 1 (5 Inn.)

The Stars jumped out to a 2-1 lead after two innings thanks to back-to-back RBI singles for Kuderna and classmate Abby Maike (Savanna, Ill.) in the top of the second.   Dominican plated single runs in each of the third and fourth innings before breaking the game open with a six-run rally in the top of the fifth.  The big blow in the inning was a two-run double off the bat of Ali Woitovich (Downers Grove, Ill.).

Behrens, improving to 4-5 on the season, allowed just four base runners, three hits and one walk, while striking out two.
