Stars Come Up Short, Eliminated From NACC Tournament

Chasing three runs in the top of the ninth, the Dominican University baseball team scratched across one run and put the tying run on base but ultimately came up short in a 7-5 loss to the MSOE Raiders, eliminating the Stars from the 2016 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament and ending Dominican's season with a record of 18-24.

The Raiders staked to a 6-0 lead after two innings, chasing Dominican's Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) from the game as the senior right-hander surrendered six runs, three earned, on nine hits before being lifted with two outs in the second inning.

Tyler Brown (Bartlett, Ill.) came on in relief and gave the Stars' offense a chance to get back in the game, hanging four consecutive zeros while Dominican's offense scratched out a single run in each of the next three frames.

Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up an RBI in the top of the third when he grounded out with runners at the corners.  An inning later, senior Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) cranked a solo home run, his first of the season and second career home run in the NACC Tournament, and then collected another RBI in the fifth when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to narrow the lead to 6-3.

The Stars pulled another run closer in the top of the seventh when Mike Piotrowski (Arlington Heights, Ill.) bounced into a fielder's choice with runners at the corners, allowing Joe Kukla (Chicago, Ill.) to cross the plate but MSOE got that run back in the bottom of the seventh, finally getting to Brown in his fifth inning of relief.

In the top of the eighth, Dominican stranded Royce Salay (Henderson, Nev.) at second after the junior roped a two-out double to the gap in right-center.

After Quinten Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth, the Stars got to work in the ninth.  Kukla reached second when a MSOE error started the inning.  After a groundout, Kukla scored when Janison singled to left.  A fly out and a walk later, JT Hicks (Albion, Mich.) had chance to be the hero with the tying run at first but the senior went down on strikes to end the game.

In total, the Stars collected ten hits, including three for Janison and two for Kukla and Hicks, but Dominican stranded ten runners in the loss.
