Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stars Earn Draw On Late Strike By Saiz

The Dominican University men's soccer team used a late goal by Frankie Saiz to earn a 1-1 draw against the North Park University Vikings on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field.

After the sides felt each other out tactically for much of the first half, North Park capitalized when Dominican failed to clear their own end leading to an opportunity for Emil Eriksson in the 24th minute of play.  Eriksson's initial shot was blocked near the top of the 18-yard box but the Vikings' midfielder got the ball right back getting off a shot from distance that beat the Stars' Gabriel Gongora to give North Park a 1-0 advantage.

After just seven shots total were allowed in the first 45 minutes, things started to open up in the second half with Dominican ripping eight shots before finally leveling the score in the 84th minute thanks to one of the Stars' three second half corners.  Nestor Ascencio's service found the head of Isaac Perez who's header was blocked at the goal line with the rebound collected by Saiz who was able to find the back of the goal for the Stars' first tally of the season.

"I thought our restarts were effective," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach. "It starts with making a good decision on what we should be running at that moment and I thought we made some good decisions and then you have to be effective and we were effective."

The Vikings held a slight, 18-14, advantage in shots with both teams putting seven shots on goal.  Dominican earned five corners while the Vikings earned four and the sides were called for a total of 37 fouls with seven cautions issued throughout the match.

"I thought we came out flat in the first half and didn't play with much intensity," commented Baumann, "but I thought in the second half that turned around and we started to compete and play with intensity. We played a little more direct and got a result."

The Stars, now 0-2-2 on the season, continue their non-conference slate on Saturday night, taking on the North Central College Cardinals in Naperville, Illinois.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
