The Dominican University women's basketball team saw their longest winning streak in over five years come to an end on Tuesday evening, suffering a 61-50 setback at the hands of the Benedictine University Eagles at the Rice Center in Lisle, Illinois.
Â
The Stars shot just 25-percent from the field and from three but managed to keep the game close by holding the Eagles more than six points under their season scoring average.Â
Timiya Ray had a career night for the Stars, dropping in a career-high 21 points while pulling down 16 rebounds.
Â
After the Eagles led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter, it was a three-point play by Ray that angled the lead back down to eight with 22 seconds to play before 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch for the Eagles put the game away.
Â
"Today we lacked energy in the beginning of the game and focus on sporadic defensive possessions," Gabby Johnson, the Stars' fifth-year head coach said following the loss. "That is part of maturity level with a young team learning you can't take possessions off."
Â
"Timiya showed us what she can do," continued Johnson. "She impacted the game on both ends of the floor and from a team standpoint, she is the fifth person to lead us in scoring in the last five games. That bodes well for us as we are getting tremendous efforts from a number of individuals."
Â
Fellow freshman
Lexi Hoskins joined Ray in double-figures, scoring ten points on 3-for-7 shooting from three-point distance.
Â
The Eagles were paced by Venita Parsons who scored 13 points in 34 minutes.
Â
Dominican, now 5-12 on the season, takes a break from league play, hosting the Mount Mary University Blue Angels on Thursday in a non-conference tilt. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Dominican's Igini Sports Forum.
