The Dominican University women's basketball team, one of the hottest teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) the past two weeks, ran into the league's top team on Saturday, falling to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors, 72-51.
Â
The Stars hung with the Warriors in the first quarter, opening a 9-3 lead early, before the Warriors closed the quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 14-13 lead after ten minutes.
Â
Trailing by just four with 4:27 to play in the second quarter, Dominican endured a four-minute scoreless drought while the Warriors poured in 13 points during the stretch to open a 17-point lead at the break.
Â
Dominican kept pace with the Warriors in the second half but could not manage to chip away at the Wisconsin Lutheran lead.
Â
"I am pleased with our energy and overall effort today,"
Gabby Johnson said, "but we cannot lose our focus against teams like WLC. They put teams away by wearing you down and forcing you to make mistakes. We will focus on eliminating crucial mistakes, and my hope is that a more mature and disciplined team shows up for the last six games."
Â
Freshman
Timiya Ray continued to impress, dropping in a team-high 13 points while grabbing six rebounds and tallying four blocks. On the week, Ray averaged 18.7 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per game.
Â
The Stars, now 6-13 on the season and 4-10 in the NACC, return to the Igini Sports Forum to host the Alverno College Inferno on Wednesday evening for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
