The Dominican University women's volleyball team picked up their fourth straight win, topping the Alverno College Inferno in four sets (25-17, 21-25, 25-13, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The win streak is now the Stars' longest winning streak since winning eight straight matches from October 3 to October 24, 2015.
"We knew after a long tough match last night, that a 15-hour turnaround was going to be tough to do," said Brittany Sisk, the Stars' first-year head coach. "It may not have all been perfect, but I'm proud that we found a way to dig a little deeper and pull out a win."
The Stars hit .226 in the win, led by
Kendyl Todd who knocked down a match-high 15 kills while hitting at a .520 clip on 25 attacks. Todd is hitting a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) best .374 on the season and has upped that in league play, hitting .414 against NACC opponents.
With the Inferno looking to slow Todd in the fourth set, setter
Anastasia Labadessa turned to freshman
Gillian Jones and sophomore
Stephanie Cole. The duo combined for seven of the Stars' 11 kills in the set with Cole knocking down four of her five kills for the match in the fourth set and Jones finishing with three kills on seven swings in the fourth set.
Labadessa doled out 35 assists in the winning effort, utilizing five hitters including Jones and
Alex Kisten who added eight kills apiece.
Defensively, the Stars tallied five total blocks and 56 digs to limit Alverno to a .109 attack percentage and force 22 hitting errors. Todd posted a team-high three block assists while
Megan Parker led the back row effort with a match-high 20 digs.
For the Inferno, Cailey Jeske led the way with 14 kills in the losing effort.
Dominican, now 15-10 on the season and 7-3 in NACC play, return to action on Tuesday night, traveling down Division Street to take on the Concordia University Chicago Cougars in conference action. The match, slated for a 7:00 p.m. start, closes out the conference regular season for the Stars who currently sit in a tie for third place in the conference standings.
