Dominican University Athletics

The Dominican University women's soccer team (17-1-4) saw their historical season come to a close on Saturday night with a 5-0 loss to the defending national champions, the Washington University Bears, in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship. 
 
"It was a great season for us," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head coach in his fourth season. "The support we got from the Dominican community all year was absolutely amazing. I'm proud to look back and see just how far we have come in four years."
 
Playing in their first national tournament contest in program history, the Stars surrendered what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 15^th minute when WashU's Taylor Cohen was able to get on the end of a Darcy Cunningham corner to open the scoring.
 
The Bears added another tally in the final seconds of the half to make it 2-0 after 45 minutes.
 
Playing down and chasing the scoreboard, Dominican got spread thin in the back and surrendered three more goals in the second half, including two goals just seven minutes apart between the 61^st minute and 68^th minute that broke the match open.
 
"While it was not the ending we were looking for," continued Carrillo, "we have a lot to be proud of. The seniors that finished their career today have helped lay the foundation for our program as we look to become a contender not just in our conference, but on a regional and national level."
 
Despite the loss, the Stars set a number of firsts during the 2017 season including winning the program's first conference tournament championship and appearing in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship for the first time.  Dominican's 17 wins on the season is also a program single-season record while the lone loss is also a program-best.
