Amari Stafford poured in a career-high 36 points to lead the Stars to a 93-55 win over the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks on Wednesday night at the Igini Sports Forum. Stafford connected on a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) single-game record tying ten three pointers, shooting 10-for-12 from behind the arc, as the Stars improve to 3-2 on the season.
"Tonight was a huge game for us in multiple ways," claimed Gabby Johnson, the Stars' head coach, following the win. "Amari had a breakout game and we saw a lot of different contributions from everyone. The fourth quarter showed us that we can dig in and pull away from teams. Now we need to refocus and prepare for Saturday's matchup with a good Wisconsin Lutheran team."
Leading 35-21 at the break, Dominican had a huge second half, outscoring the Scarlet Hawks 58-34 over the final 20 minutes, including a 32-point fourth quarter effort. Dominican shot 9-for-10 from three-point distance during the second half including a 6-for-7 performance from Stafford and a perfect 2-for-2 from freshman
Alisha Markley.
Stafford's career night led three in double-figures scoring for the Stars, including Markley who finished with a 18 and
Alexis Hoskins who added 17 in her first start of the season.
For Illinois Tech, Kaylee Wicka led the way with 21 points on 6-for-24 shooting while converting on eight of 11 attempts from the foul line.
Dominican will look to pick up its first win in NACC play on Saturday when the Stars travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College to take on the Warriors. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
