Isaac Moore's corner three broke a 71-71 tie with 1:41 to play as the Dominican University men's basketball team scored the final eight points of the game en route to a 79-71 win over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee. With the win, the Stars improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
"Today was a good conference road win," said Mark White, the Stars' head coach. "We have been emphasizing the importance of running a good team offense and the guys did a great job. We controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish."
Jonny Woolf finished with a game-high 25 points in the winning effort for the Stars. The senior shot 7-for-11 from the field, including going 2-for-5 from three, and converted on nine of ten attempts at the foul line. Freshman
Jackson Smith added 14 points, connecting on 4-for-8 from three-point distance, while
Connor Dartt and Moore finished with ten apiece as the Stars put four in double-figures scoring.
The Warriors led by as many as six in the first half, including a 25-19 advantage with 5:47 to play in the half before the Stars went on a 14-5 run, capped by a
Nick LaVere three that put the Stars ahead 33-30 with 2:42 remaining in the first half.
After a quick 4-0 run for the Warriors, the sides traded one-point leads the rest of the half with Dominican emerging the first 20 minutes with a 37-36 advantage after
Sean Ek split a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the half.
The Stars tried to pull away in the second half, getting their lead up to seven, including a 66-59 lead with 7:06 to play, but the Warriors refused to go away. A 12-4 run for the Warriors, capped by a pair of free throws by Tyler DeYoung with 2:33 to play, evened the score at 71-71 before Moore's second triple of the game put the Stars ahead for good.
Dominican finished shooting 25-for-47 from the field, going 11-for-25 from three-point distance, and shot 18-for-25 from the charity stripe.
At the other end of the floor, the Warriors shot 23-for-51 from the field, going just 2-for-10 from three. Wisconsin Lutheran took advantage of 27 trips to the foul line, connecting on 23.
Chase Nowak led the way for the Warriors in the losing effort, scoring 24 points, including 16 in the first half. Collin Kennedy added 13, while DeYong finished with a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Stars will take a quick break from league play, returning home to the Igini Sports Forum to host the Maranatha Baptist University Crusaders on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
