The Dominican University baseball team looked to recover from their season opening loss on Saturday with a doubleheader victory of the MacMurray College Highlanders on Sunday but the Stars came up empty, dropping game one 2-1 before falling in game two 17-1. The Stars managed seven hits in both ends of the twin bill but committed five errors on the day.
"This wasn't a good day," said Dominican head coach Steve Hardman. "We had a late lead in game one and it is always disappointing when you lose a late lead. We have had three weeks of good practice and that didn't translate onto the field this weekend. Luckily it is early in the season and we can figure some things out before we get back on the field next week in Florida."
Junior right-hander took the loss in game one despite tossing seven-plus innings of four hit baseball and giving up just two runs, one earned, while striking out nine and walking just three.
Brown got the first hitter in the bottom of the seventh, looking at strike three, before surrendering a walk ahead of the game-tying double. Brown then gave way to the bullpen.
Billy Balatsos got the first hitter he faced to bounce out to third for the second out of the inning but then hit a pair of batters before the go-ahead run scored on a passed ball.
An error in the top of the ninth allowed the Stars to put the tying run on base before the Highlanders nailed down the victory.
The Stars had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when sophomore
Mike Piotrowski singled to score
Royce Salay with two away in the inning.
Game two was all MacMurray as the Highlanders got to Dominican's starter,
Jason Gissendaner, for six runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Stars' lone run came in the top of the seventh when freshman
Frankie Sessa singled with two outs to score
Colin Janison from second.
The Stars open the season 0-3 with a week before their next game. Dominican will fly south to Fort Myers, Florida, next weekend for eight games at the Gene Cusic Classic in seven days.
