Stars Sweep Raiders

The Dominican University baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Rivier University Raiders behind a pair of dominant pitching performances from Colin Janison and Tyler Brown while the bats pounded out 29 hits and scored 15 runs.

With the sweep, the Stars move to 4-6 on the season and 4-3 on the team's trip to Fort Myers, Florida, for the 2017 Gene Cusic Classic.  Dominican closes out the trip tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time game against Illinois College at the Player Development Complex.

Game 1: Dominican 6, Rivier 3

For the second straight outing Colin Janison fanned ten batters, moving to 2-1 on the season with a 3.86 earned run average after tossing a complete-game in his third start of the season.  Janison surrendered just three runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks.

Despite the solid outing from Janison, the Stars trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth before the bats came alive for five runs.  Nate Natividad started the Stars' rally with a triple to left field and then scored when Mike Buckley singled.  A pair of singles later, the Stars had the bases loaded when a Raiders' miscue in the field allowed another two runs to score for Dominican to take the lead.  Janison then helped his own cause with an RBI double before Frank Sessa capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.

Joe Kukla led the offense, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored while Janison went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Game 2: Dominican 9, Rivier 0

Brown followed Janison's game one gem with his own dominant performance, a three-hit shutout while striking out eight hitters and walking none.  With the win, Brown improves to 1-2 in his three starts, boasting a 1.86 earned run average.

The Stars got on the board in the second when Mike Piotrowski doubled with two away and then scored on a Natividad single.  The Stars tacked on another run in the top of the third as Royce Salay scored on a Janison single.

After two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, the Stars broke the game open with three runs in the top of the sixth.  Back-to-back RBI singles by Kukla and KJ Wilk started the Stars' rally which concluded with a RBI single to left off the bat of freshman Austin Michals.

Kukla, Janison and Natividad tallied three hits apiece while Salay added two base knocks.
