The Dominican University men's volleyball team picked up a pair of three-set wins at the Igini Sports Forum on Friday night, topping Endicott College (25-11, 25-17, 25-21) before sweeping through North Central (25-23, 25-21, 25-15) to run their winning streak to 17 matches and remain unbeaten in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) play.
"I have been looking forward to this doubleheader of matches for some time now," said
Dan Ames, the Stars' head coach, following the match. "Tonight was the first real test for us in a couple of weeks and the guys were up to the task. Now we turn our attention to the next match. We need to keep our focus and continue to play with the same intensity next week."
The Stars' offense, run by senior setter
Alex Coyne, combined to hit .388 in the pair of victories.
Mason Solbrig,
Luke Spicer,
Nick Timreck and
Michal Kawa all posted attack percentages better than .340 with Solbrig connecting for 17 kills on 22 total attacks for a team-best .682 hitting percentage in the wins.
Defensively, the Stars, boasting the nation's best block, averaged 2.25 blocks over the six sets. Timreck led the charge at the net, collecting eight total blocks, seven assists and one solo, in the winning effort.
Dominican trailed just once throughout their matinee match against the Endicott Gulls, leading the first two sets from start to finish before Endicott took a short-lived three-point lead to open the third set before Dominican rattled off five straight points to take a 5-3 lead and never looked back.
Spicer knocked down a match-high 14 kills for the Stars while Solbrig and Kawa terminated nine and seven rallies respectively. Coyne rounded out his second double-double of the season, collecting 30 assists and 11 digs.
In the nightcap, the Stars' offense was once again paced by Spicer with 13 kills on 22 swings but this time attack was even more balanced with Kawa adding 12 kills on 20 attacks and Solbrig and
Jeremy Royko knocking down eight kills apiece.
The Stars are now 17-1 on the season, not having suffered a defeat in nearly two months. Dominican will continue to defend its home court next weekend, hosting Wittenberg University on Friday, Olivet College on Saturday and Mount St. Joseph and third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday.
