The Dominican University baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Maranatha Baptist University Sabrecats on Thursday evening at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium, taking game one 5-3 behind five solid innings on the mound from freshman
Kanoa Ikeda-Flynn before pushing across 15 runs in a 15-1 victory in game two.
Â
Ikeda-Flynn got his second career start in game one, surrendering just one unearned run over five innings while limiting the Sabrecats to just four hits. The left-hander issued three walks while striking out three. The win was the first of the season for the rookie.
Â
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second,
Mike Buckley evened the game at 1-1 with an RBI single. Later in the frame, a Sabrecats' error gave Dominican the lead before
Brian Costello plated Buckley for a 3-1 lead after two on a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Stars added some much needed insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles by
Matt Segovia and
Mike Piotrowski.
Â
The runs proved huge for Dominican as Maranatha scored twice in the top of the seventh, loading the bases before a sac fly and ground out to short pulled the Sabrecats within 5-3 before right-hander
Daniel Supple got the final out.
Â
Offensively, Segovia, Piotrowski and
Joe Kukla had two singles apiece.
Â
In game two, the Stars scored early and often, pounding out 12 hits and taking advantage of four Maranatha errors. Freshman
Frankie Sessa knocked in four runs, going 4-for-5 with a double while Segovia and Kukla picked up two more hits apiece.Â
Roque Bruno collected his second hit of the season, a line drive home run that left the yard in left in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
On the mound, rookie
Austin Michals limited the Sabrecats to just two hits and two walks over four innings to pick up his first win of the season. The right-hander punched out three in the winning effort.
Â
With the wins, the Stars improve to 10-17 on the season with a return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on deck for this weekend. On Saturday, the Stars host the Benedictine University Eagles for a noon doubleheader at Boomers Stadium before the Stars hit Division Street on Sunday to take on the Concordia University Chicago Cougars in the River Forest Rivalry Series.
