Stars Sweep Inferno Behind Klostermann

Dominican University freshman right-hander Cat Klostermann tossed a total of 11 innings in the circle, picking up wins in both ends of the Stars' doubleheader against the Alverno College Inferno on Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The rookie fanned 12 hitters in a complete-game shutout victory, 1-0, in game one before allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in four innings of work in game two to lead the Stars to an 8-3 triumph.

With the wins, Klostermann improves to 10-2 on the season, lowering her conference-best earned run average to 1.01.

The Stars, now 27-9 on the season and 12-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), close out the 2017 regular season campaign this coming week, traveling to Aurora University for a twin bill against the Spartans on Thursday before rounding out the season at Benedictine University on Saturday.

Game One: Dominican 1, Alverno 0

Ali Woitovich provided all the offense Klostermann needed in the top of the first, plating Gabby Curran with a two-out single after Curran had singled and stole second earlier in the inning.

After pitching around a one-out single in the sixth and a pair of singles in the fifth, Klostermann closed out the win by striking out the side in the seventh.

Curran finished 3-for-4 with a double while Abby Maike went 2-for-4 hitting behind Curran.  The rest of the Stars' lineup went just 2-for-19 with a pair of walks, both issued to Gabi Alfaro.

Game Two: Dominican 8, Alverno 3

The Stars staked Klostermann to an early lead in game two, pushing across two runs before the freshman even took to the circle.  Alfaro drove in the first run of the game, singling up the middle with one away to score Curran.  After an error and a single loaded the bases, Sydney Kuderna brought home Alfaro with a sac fly.

After Klostermann pitched around a one-out single in the bottom of the inning, the Stars' bats got back to work in the second inning.  Maike delivered an RBI double before an Inferno error allowed the sophomore to cross, giving the Stars a 4-0 lead after two.

After Alverno got a single run back in the third and fourth innings, Dominican broke the game open with a three-run top of the fifth.  Kuderna sparked the rally with a one-out RBI double.  Alyssa Domico then scored on a successful squeeze bunt before Kuderna came across on a single by Marissa Burns.

Klostermann turned the game over to Kuderna in the circle in the bottom of the fifth and the sophomore picked up the save, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over the final three innings.

Alfaro, Curran and Kuderna picked up two hits apiece as the Stars' broke out for 11 hits in the winning effort.
