Stars Slug Way To Non-Conference Victory

The Dominican University baseball team broke out the bats on Wednesday afternoon, slugging their way to a 14-4 win over the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks in non-conference play.  Freshmen Mike Buckley and Matt Segovia each went deep in the win for the Stars who collected 22 hits, including six extra-base hits, on the day.

"It was nice to see our bats come alive today," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' head baseball coach, following the win. "We played with a lot of energy and that is exactly what we need going into a big conference weekend."

After Buckley's first career home run, a two-run shot in the top of the second, gave the Stars a 3-0 lead, Dominican broke the game open with a pair of big innings.  The Stars pushed across five runs on five hits.  Nathaniel Natividad sparked the rally when he was hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning.  After a wild pitch, KJ Wilk roped a double to the gap in right-center to score Natividad.  Colin Janison followed a double of his own and then scored when Segovia launched his team-leading third home run of the season to centerfield.   Mike Piotrowski then singled through the left side of the infield and scored all the way from first when Buckley doubled to cap the rally.

After the Scarlet Hawks clawed back to within four, 8-4, the Stars sealed their 13th victory of the season with six runs in the top of the ninth on six hits.  The rally was again ignited by a hit-by-pitch as this time it was Mike Morelli taking one for the team to lead off the inning.  Frankie Sessa, Joe Kukla, Roque Bruno and Morelli all collected RBI singles as the Stars batted around for the second time in the ball game and Piotrowski plated the other two with a bases loaded single.

Austin Michals got the start on the mound for the Stars, tossing three scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen.  Jason Gissendaner worked a 1-2-3 seventh to earn the win while Royce Salay worked out of a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the eighth.

Every hitter in the lineup picked up at least one hit for the Stars, including Segovia who went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs.  Sessa and Piotrowski picked up three hits apiece while Buckley plated three runs on an RBI double and two-run home run.

The win pushes the Stars to 13-21 on the season with three Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) series to play.  The Stars return to league play on Saturday, hosting the MSOE Raiders for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.
