The Dominican University baseball team opened Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Sunday afternoon at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium, dropping a doubleheader to the Edgewood College Eagles by scores of 6-3 and 3-0. The Stars managed just 11 hits in the series, picking up just three hits in game two after collecting eight hits while stranding eight runners in the series opener.
"Our offense didn't show up today," commented Steve Hardman, the Stars' head coach following the doubleheader loss. "Our starting pitching struggled but they still gave us a chance to win and our bullpen was very strong today; we just could not get anything going offensively."
The losses drop the Stars to 5-10 overall and 0-2 in the NACC with a series against the Aurora University Spartans on deck. Dominican is slated to travel to Aurora on Monday for a doubleheader against the Spartans at 1:00 p.m. at the Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery, Illinois.
Game One: Edgewood 6, Dominican 3
The Eagles raced out to a 5-0 lead after three innings before Dominican University's
Colin Janison settled down to toss three more innings before giving was to the bullpen after the sixth inning.
Janison led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and then came across for the Stars' first run of the game when
Matt Segovia doubled to the gap in right-center.
The Stars drew another run closer in the seventh as
Nathaniel Natividad led off the frame with a single.
Mike Buckley followed with a double to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Natividad came across when
Royce Salay bounced out to short but Buckley was stranded at second as Edgewood's Jeff Wolf got the next two hitters.
After another scoreless inning for the Dominican bullpen, the Stars pulled within 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth. The Stars loaded the bases with nobody out before Segovia again plated Janison, this time with a sac fly but stranded the tying run when closer Danny Alpino came on to slam the door, getting the final two outs of the eighth before tossing a 1-2-3 ninth.
Janison was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five.
Noah Loeffler surrendered one run in 2.1 innings of work while
Jason Gissendaner retired the only two hitter he faced.
Game Two: Edgewood 3, Dominican 0
In game two, Edgewood's Steve Gavin tossed a three-hit shutout to improve to 2-0 on the season while Dominican's
Tyler Brown took the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned, on six hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings.
Brian Costello picked up two hits for the Stars in the losing effort.
