The Dominican University softball team split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) series on Thursday night at the Ballpark at Rosemont, taking game one 2-1 in 12 innings before dropping the nightcap, 11-0.
For the Stars in game one,
Sydney Kuderna and
Cat Klostermann combined to scatter eight hits while surrendering just one run. After Kuderna limited Falcons to one run on four hits and three walks over the first six innings, Klostermann came on in the seventh and allowed just four hits over the next six innings while striking out four and walking just two to pick up the win.
Offensively, the Stars pounded out 12 hits in the extra-inning affair but stranded 14 runners before scoring the game-winning run when
Gabi Alfaro was able to score thanks to a Falcons' throwing error with the bases loaded.
Ali Woitovich started off the 12
th with a double to the wall in left. Dominican then put runners on the corners when Alfaro bunted for her third hit of the evening. After the Falcons' Emily Brekke elected to load the bases with an intentional walk, the Falcons nearly escaped the inning, getting
Katie Fredrick to pop out before
Alena Valenzuela bounced into a fielder's choice with Woitovich retired at the plate.
Jacadi Rivera, who saved the game for Dominican with a diving catch to end the tenth with two runners on, followed with a ground ball to short, but an errant throw allowed Rivera to reach and Alfaro to cross for the winning run.
Dominican got its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Woitovich and Alfaro started the inning with back-to-back singles and Woitovich then scoring on a sac fly.
The Falcons evened the score in the top of the sixth, leading off the inning with a triple off the bat of Molly O'Connell who then scored when Carly Sobrilsky doubled to deep centerfield.
Offensively,
Alyssa Domico and Alfaro tallied three hits apiece while
Abby Maike and Woitovich added two hits apiece.
Game two followed a much different format with the Falcons pounding out 12 hits while the Stars' bats went cold, managing just three hits.
Leading 1-0 after four innings, the Falcons broke the game open with four runs in the top of the fifth before putting the Stars away with a six-run inning in the top of the sixth.
Michele Behrens was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and four walks over 4.1 innings in the circle.
With the split, the Stars move to 16-6 on the season and 1-3 in the NACC. Dominican will travel to Marian University on Saturday before taking on the Lakeland University Muskies in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on Sunday.
