The Dominican University men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead in the 19
th minute of play only to see the Elmhurst College Bluejays score three unanswered goals to get past the Stars, 3-1. The loss drops Dominican to 3-2-0 on the season with the North Central College Cardinals visiting the Stars at West Campus Field on Saturday.
Nestor Ascencio opened the scoring in the 19
th minute after a Dominican corner resulted in a flurry in the box before Nick King, the Elmhurst goalkeeper, took Ascencio down in the box. The Dominican senior buried the ensuing penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season, giving the Stars an early 1-0 lead.
The Stars kept the pressure on Elmhurst for the next ten minutes, forcing King to make a pair of saves before Sam Johnson earned the Bluejays a penalty of their own in the 32
nd minute. Zach Clements converted to level the score at one and then just 44 seconds later gave Elmhurst a 2-1 advantage, converting another penalty after Jason Rhodes was fouled in the box.
The Stars pressed forward in the second half, getting off eight shots but putting just two on frame that were saved by King.
In the 77
th minute, Elmhurst's Austin Culver carried out of the left corner, dribbling along the endline before lifting at shot at Dominican's
Aaron Menyes. Menyes blocked the shot with his hands but surrendered a rebound that found the feet of Buddy Nelson who put a shot inside the far post for an insurance tally for the Bluejays.
Dominican outshot the Bluejays 18-13, putting six shots on frame to Elmhurst's eight. Corner kicks were even at nine attempts apiece and Menyes and King tallied five saves apiece.
"I'm looking forward to getting back on the field tomorrow," commented Dominican head coach Erick Baumann after the match. "We need to work some things out as we close out our non-conference schedule on Saturday."
