The Dominican University women's basketball team had their second-best scoring output of the season, scoring an 85-77 win over the Edgewood College Eagles in Madison, Wisconsin, on Wednesday night. With the win, the Stars climb back to .500 on the season at 7-7 and improve to 3-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
Timiya Ray scored a season-high 25 points, leading four in double-figures for Dominican in the winning effort.
Stephenee Huggans added 18 off the bench while
Alisha Markley added 13 points and
Shamia Clark dropped in 12, all coming in the first half.
"Today was a huge team win for us," said Gabby Johnson, the Stars' head coach, following the win. "It's great to get back to .500 overall while taking a much-needed conference win."
"It was awesome to have four players in double figures, and they did it on fifty percent shooting from the field. We need to pair that offensive output with our defensive intensity and we will be a fun team down the stretch."
The Stars shot better than 55-percent from the field in the first half, opening a 50-45 lead at the break. Clark and Huggans each scored 12 off the bench in the opening half as the Dominican bench outscored the Edgewood reserves 24-14 over the first two quarters.
The second half belonged to Ray as the sophomore poured in 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting after the break and added seven rebounds, three blocks and a steal over the game's final 20 minutes.
Ray finished with a game-high 12 rebounds as she logged her fifth double-double of the season.
For the Eagles, Diamond Pikulyk led the way with 21 points on 10-for-14 shooting. Abby Shane added 17 points while Kelly Carpenter finished with 15 in the losing effort.
The Stars return home to host the MSOE Raiders on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. as part of a NACC doubleheader with the Dominican University men's and women's basketball teams.
