The Dominican University men's soccer team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit for a 2-1 win over the Edgewood College Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Breese Stevens Field in Madison, Wisconsin. Freshman
Jonathan Hernandez scored both goals for Dominican who improves to 8-5-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with the win.
"We came here in need of leaving with three points and we did," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach following the win. "We conceded an early goal but responded with two nice goals to take over the lead."
The Eagles got on the board in the seventh minute of play when Lee Garrett scored his 11
th of the season, beating Dominican's
Daniel Dominguez.
The Stars were able to level the scoring in the 20
th minute when
Denis Soldo served a ball from the right corner to the back post where Hernandez was able to get enough height for a header past Edgewood's Carson Hughes.
Dominican then took the lead with Soldo and Hernandez connecting for what proved to be the game winner in the 32
nd minute. The run started with a throw in Dominican's defensive third. The Stars connected on a couple of passes with their heads before Soldo settled for a run up the left side before slotting a pass to Hernandez on the back side where the rookie tapped in for his fifth goal of the season and first game-winner.
After dominating the stat sheet in the first half, outshooting the Eagles 12-4, Dominican protected the lead over the second 45, allowing just one shot on frame to Dominguez.
The Stars have a quick turnaround, taking a break from league play on Sunday to take on the UW-Platteville Pioneers in non-conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Platteville's Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
