The Dominican University women's soccer team ran its program-best winning streak to 14 matches on Wednesday afternoon, picking up a 2-0 win over the Concordia University Chicago in the Northwestern Mutual River Forest Rivalry Series matchup.
Josseline Williams scored both goals for the Stars while Dominican defense pitched its 14
th consecutive shutout.
The Cougars kept the high-powered Dominican offense off the scoreboard until the 78
th minute when
Ashleigh Huerta served a ball from the endline that found Williams on the backside for a header that found its way past Concordia's Madeline Kroll for what proved to be the game-winner.
Dominican added an insurance tally later with Williams finishing off a penalty kick for her 22
nd goal of the season after
Tania Paez was taken down inside the box. The foul was one of 26 whistled in a physical matchup between the two neighborhood rivals.
"This was a big win for us," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' fifth-year head coach. "We are going to get everyone's best game from here on out. Credit to CUC, they executed their game plan and defended well but I was proud of the way we grinded this one out until the final whistle. In the back, we stayed calm and organized and did not give up any quality chances."
Dominican held a 9-4 advantage in shots, putting four shots on goal while allowing just one shot through to goalkeeper
Abbey Brown who picked up her tenth shutout of the season.
Dominican, now 14-2-0 on the season and 9-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, will look to keep its winning streak going on Saturday, hosting the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field.
