The Dominican University men's soccer team looked dominant in a 4-1 win over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field in River Forest. The Stars scored two goals in each half, improving to 10-5-1 on the season and 7-3-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
"That was a good win, earning three more big points," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head men's soccer coach. "The guys had a great warmup and played with a lot of confidence. Although we didn't finish off as many chances as we should have, that first half was really good execution of our game plan. There were a lot of quality individual performances out there today."
Alexander Lulek opened the game's scoring in the 20
th minute when he made a run up the middle of the field to get on the end of
Isaac Perez's centering pass from along the endline. Lulek beat the Warriors' Cedric Guichard for his fifth goal of the season.
In the 45
th minute it was Perez's chance to get on the scoresheet when the junior got on the end of
Michael Delaney's long service over the Warriors' back line. Perez took two touches before sliding a low shot with his left foot to the far post for what proved to be the game-winner.
In the 50
th minute,
Denis Soldo netted an unassisted goal, gathering in a failed clearance attempt by the Warriors at the top of the 18-yard box. After settling to his feet, Soldo took a touch to his left to elude a defender before placing a low shot just inside the right post from 18-yards. For Soldo, the goal was his fourth of the season.
Perez then closed out Dominican's scoring in the 68
th minute, netting his team-leading seventh goal of the season when
Marco Sanchez's service from the right back was knocked down, finding Perez near the penalty spot for another low, left-footed shot that beat Guichard.
The Warriors were finally able to crack the scoreboard in the 75
th minute when Jacob Bruecker's endline service found Noah Hernandez in the goal mouth for Hernandez's second goal of the season. The shot was one of just seven for the Warriors for the match as Dominican outshot the visitors 30-7, putting 17 shots on goal while just four found their way onto Dominican's frame.
Freshman goalkeeper
Daniel Dominguez made three saves for the Stars, improving to 9-5-0 for his rookie campaign with a 0.94 goals against average.
The win at least one match for the Stars in the 2018 NACC Tournament, ensuring Dominican will finish no lower than fourth-place in the conference standings.
Dominican will return to action on Wednesday, hosting the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field.
