The Dominican University women's volleyball team guaranteed a home match in the 2018 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament with a 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19) win over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors at the Igini Sports Forum on Saturday night. The win ensures the Stars a top three finish in the conference regular season standings as they sit in a tie for second heading into the final regular season conference match on Wednesday.
"This was another gritty win for us," said Cameron Andrew, the Stars' first-year head coach. "We played through some really tight moments and got the win."
"After a tough, hard-fought match on the road last night, it was great to take care of business on our home floor. We made it a little harder than it needed to be, but we found a way when it mattered."
The Stars outhit the Warriors .215 to .126 in the winning effort, knocking down 58 kills on 172 total attacks while committing just 21 errors despite 12 Warriors' blocks. Freshman
Gabija Sinickaite led the attack, collecting 19 kills on 38 swings with just one error. After the Stars dropped the second set, the rookie put the offense on her back in the third set, knocking down eight kills while hitting .666 in the frame. After a team-high 15 kills on Friday night,
Gillian Jones knocked down 13 in Saturday's win, including five in the first and four in the fourth set.
Anastasia Labadessa ran the offense, using six different attackers to pick up 47 assists.
Defensively, Dominican posted eight of its own blocks and picked up 87 digs to slow the Warriors' attack.
Megan Parker led the back row effort with a match-high 31 digs while Jones and Labadessa rounded out double-doubles with 16 and 11 digs respectively.
At the net, Sinickaite and
Stephanie Cole tallied five block assists each while
Olivia Magnussen picked up two solo blocks and a block assists for three total blocks.
The Stars, now 18-7 on the season and 9-2 in the NACC, close out conference regular season play on Wednesday, traveling to Aurora, Illinois, to take on the front-running Aurora University Spartans at 7:00 p.m.
