Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stars Edge Spartans To Advance To NACC Title Match

The Dominican University men's soccer team advanced to the 2018 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament championship match with a 3-2 overtime win over the Aurora University on Wednesday night in the tournament's semifinal round.  With the win the Stars improve to 13-5-1 overall and will now meet the MSOE Raiders in the championship match on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee.

The Stars opened a 2-0 lead before the Spartans roared back with a pair of late goals in the second half to force overtime.  In the extra period, Dominican's Daniel Dominguez made a pair of huge saves in the 92nd minute to keep the score level until Josh Prindle put a shot between a pair of Aurora defenders inside the far post from 20 yards out for the game's golden goal.

"That was a great win," exclaimed Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach, following the match. "After they tied it up, we kept our heads up and were determined to get it done. We know we still haven't accomplished our goal though. From the first day of preseason we set out to win our league's AQ and get back into another NCAA tourney. Tonight's result gives us that chance on Saturday."

Dominican's Isaac Perez opened the scoring in the seventh minute of play, rolling a low shot that just snuck inside the far post from 25 yards out.

Jonathan Hernandez added to the Stars' lead in the 66th minute, settling a beautiful pass served by Perez from out near midfield.  Hernandez brought down the service near the top of the 18-yard box between a pair of defenders. After a nifty turn, Hernandez took a touch into the box to his left before striking a left-footed shot back to the right side that was placed just below the crossbar.  The strike was the eighth of the season for the rookie.

Aurora threw numbers forward, eventually cracking the scoreboard in the 79th minute when Collin Foreman finished of a PK after a Dominican foul in the box.  Aurora then leveled the score just over a minute later when Foreman's corner kick service to the back post was brought down and settled inside the six-yard box by Andrew Grabowski before the sophomore knocked in the equalizer.

Each team had one more shot in regular time with neither making its way on frame.  In the second minute of extra time, Grabowski got behind the Dominican back line for a scoring opportunity turned away by Dominguez with the rebound going right back to Grabowski's feet.  Dominguez sprang back to his feet and cut down Grabowski's angle making another fantastic save to set up Prindle's heroics four minutes later.

On the golden goal, Perez shielded a Spartan defender from the ball near the top of the 18-yard box, allowing Prindle to get to a loose ball.  The junior took two short touches before splitting a pair of defenders with a shot to the far post.  For Prindle, the goal was his fifth of the season and second game-winner.

Dominican returns to the NACC Tournament championship round for the 12th time in 13 seasons, meeting the MSOE Raiders for the title for the fourth time in the last five years.  Saturday's kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Viets Field in Milwaukee.
