The Dominican University men's basketball team slipped to 0-2 on the season, falling to the Colby College Mules 83-62 at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, California, on Saturday evening.
Â
"At times we defended really well against a very good offensive team," commented Mark White, the Stars' head men's basketball coach. "Unfortunately, we did a lot of things to beat ourselves. Poor shot selection, unforced turnovers and needless fouling negated a lot of our really nice hustle plays."
Â
The Stars trailed by as little as three in the final three minutes of the first half before Colby went on a 9-1 run to close out the half, opening a 32-21 lead at the break that Dominican could not overcome.
Â
Arrin Westbrook scored a career-high ten points in the loss to lead Dominican. The sophomore shot 4-for-8 from the field in 15 minutes of action.Â
Jackson Smith added nine and
Domenic Aiello chipped in eight as 11 different players cracked the scoring column for Dominican.
Â
For the Mules, Sam Jefferson led four in double-figures with a game-high 20 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-7 from three.
Â
Dominican will look to pick up its first win of the season on Sunday, closing out their West Coast swing with University of La Verne at 10:00 a.m. PT. The Stars then return home to open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Tuesday, hosting the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.
