Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stars Scorch Scots

The Dominican University women's basketball team picked up a win on the final day of the 17th Annual Julie Costello Memorial Classic, topping the Maryville College Scots 65-57 behind double-double efforts from Alexis Hoskins and Timiya Ray.

"This was a must win for us," said Amanda Parker, the Stars' first-year head coach. "I don't think we did anything spectacular but did enough to get by with a win on the road. After a tough one yesterday, I thought Timiya and Lexi [Hoskins] really stepped up for us today. It was nice to have their leadership shine through."

Despite leading for nearly 35 minutes, the Stars trailed 54-51 with 3:04 to play but held the Scots to just three points the rest of the way while closing the game on a 14-3 run.  After pulling ahead on six-point spurt by Stephenee Huggans, the Stars converted on seven of ten attempts from the foul line during the final minute of play to seal the victory.

Ray, named to the Julie Costello All-Tournament Team following the win, scored 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field and pulled down 12 rebounds.  The junior added three blocks, one assist and one steal in 30 minutes of floor time.  Hoskins led all scorers with 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting and added 13 rebounds and two steals in 36 minutes.

Alisha Markley added ten points for Dominican as the Stars shot 23-for-54 from the field as a team, including 4-for-16 from three.

The Stars held a 41-29 edge on the glass, pulling down 11 offensive rebounds.

For the Scots, Klaire Varney scored a team-high 15 points on 5-for-13 shooting from the field but Maryville was limited to just 31-percent shooting from the field and connected on just six of 23 attempts from three-point range.

Dominican, now 3-2 on the season, returns to River Forest, Illinois, to host the Saint Mary's College Belles for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday evening.  The Stars then return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action on Saturday, traveling to Rockford University to take on the Regents.
