The Dominican University women's basketball team improved to 1-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) and 5-2 overall with a 75-55 win at Rockford University over the Regents on Saturday afternoon. The Stars opened the 12-0 run over the first five-plus minutes and never looked back.
Rockford managed to cut the lead down to four in the first quarter before Dominican posted a huge second quarter, outscoring the hosts 24-15, opening a 40-25 lead at the break and never saw their lead shrink below 14 the rest of the afternoon.
"I thought we started off really well in the first half," said Amanda Parker, the Stars' head women's basketball coach. "Then we became complacent the rest of the game. It should not matter who is on the other side or what the score is, we cannot do that. We need to be consistent and play DU basketball for the full 40 minutes."
For the second consecutive game,
Timiya Ray and
Alexis Hoskins posted double-doubles in the winning effort. Ray led the way with 12 points and a game-high 18 rebounds while Hoskins added 11 points and pulled down 15 boards. In total, the Stars dominated the glass, 52-35 advantage and pulled down 31 offensive rebounds, leading to 28 second-chance points. Dominican also forced 32 Rockford turnovers leading to 32 points for the Stars.
"Timiya and Lexi continue to lead this team on and off the floor, which for a coach is really exciting to see," added Parker. "They both had solid games today."
The Stars shot 40-percent from the field, going 34-for-85. Junior
Nyema Burns added 11 points off the Dominican bench, shooting 5-for-11 in 14 minutes of work.
Hannah Currant was one of four players for Dominican to finish with eight points, with the freshman scoring six of her eight in the opening quarter.
For the Regents, Sammi Russell led three scorers in double-figures with a game-high 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
Dominican will travel up to Madison, Wisconsin, on Tuesday evening to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Edgedome.
"We have a lot of work to do before we face a tough Edgewood team on Tuesday. We need to stay focused on the big picture," said Parker.
