The Dominican University men's basketball team connected on a program single-game record 15 three-pointers in a 93-80 win over visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action at the Igini Sports Forum on Saturday evening.
Dennis Handy scored a game-high 22 points, connecting on four of his six attempts from beyond the three-point stripe.
"It was an important win to get back to .500 in the NACC," said Mark White, Dominican's head men's basketball coach, after his Stars improved to 2-2 in league play with the win. "WLC has been playing really well and we knew we would have to be at our best both mentally and physically."
As a team the Stars shot better than fifty percent from the field for the second straight game, going 32-for-61 from the field, including 15-for-28 from three. Handy and classmate
Jackson Smith knocked down four threes each.
Antonio Amoah and
Isaac Moore buried three threes apiece while it was
Domenic Aiello's three that gave the Stars a 17-14 lead with 12:32 to go in the first half and Dominican led the rest of the night.
Aiello's three sparked a 23-8 run that was capped by an Amoah three, opening a 37-22 lead for the Stars with 3:18 to play in the half. Dominican continued to pour it on, opening their largest lead of the night with 14:13 to play in the half when Handy got out on the break for a layup in transition, opening a 25-point 61-36 lead for Dominican.
The Stars still led by 22 with 7:22 to play before a quick 10-0 run for the Warriors cut the lead down to 12 with 5:22 to play.
The Warriors continued to chip away, angling the lead down to ten before a Dennis Handy three with 2:53 pushed the lead back to 13, 86-73, before the Stars nailed squashed the Warriors' comeback at the foul line.
Smith, Amoah and Moore all joined Handy in double-figures with 16, 13 and 11 points respectively.
For the Warriors, Sam Kaufman scored a team-high 12 points on 4-for-11 shooting.
The Stars, now 2-6 overall, return to action at the Igini Sports Forum on Monday, hosting the Aurora University Spartans for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff in league play.
