Stars Go Out With A Bang

The Dominican University men's basketball team brought the 2017-2018 season to a close on Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum, topping the Rockford University Regents 77-70, knocking Rockford out of contention for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament.  For the Stars, seniors Tim Robertson and Jonny Woolf scored 24 points apiece, helping Dominican improve to 6-19 overall and 4-16 in league play.

Neither team ever led by more than nine points in the game that featured five ties and ten lead changes.  It was Rockford that held a three point, 33-30, lead at the break and then scored the first four points of the second half to open their largest lead of the afternoon, 37-30, before the Stars used a 9-2 run to even the score 39-39 with just over 17 minutes to play.

The Regents spent the next four minutes building their lead back to six, 53-47, before Robertson heated up.  The senior scored nine of Dominican's next 12 points, sparking a 16-2 run for the Stars that helped Dominican pull in front 63-55 with 8:09 to play.

Over the next five minutes, Rockford chipped away at the lead, pulling within two, 69-67, when Andrew Squires buried a three with 3:12 to play before Woolf and Robertson put the game on ice.  The combo scored the final 14 points for Dominican, including a one-hand dunk by Robertson with seconds to play, putting the exclamation point on a career that saw the Chicago native score 1,619 points—the fifth most all-time in the NACC.

Domenic Aiello added 16 for Dominican, 13 coming in the second half, as the Stars shot 20-for-39 from the field after the break.  For the game, Dominican shot just under 44-percent.

For Rockford, Tony Diemer scored a game-high 27 points on 8-for-17 shooting.  Andrew squires added 12 while Trae Blumhorst rounded out a triple-double with 11 points, ten rebounds and 12 assists.
