Stars Streak Snapped By Bucs

The Dominican University baseball team saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday, falling to the Beloit College Buccaneers, 9-6, at the Wheaton College Round Robin on Thursday afternoon.  The loss drops the Stars to 8-4 overall with a pair of games on the schedule for Friday.

"We dug ourselves into an early hole," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' head coach. "We battled but the deficit we created for ourselves was just too big. We can't do that and expect to win games."

The Buccaneers opened a 4-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first before capitalizing on a Dominican error to score a pair of unearned runs in the second inning.

Dominican rallied for three runs in the top of the third, cutting the lead down to a run, 4-3.  Mike Buckley lined an RBI double into the gap in right-center to put the Stars on the board.  After a walk, Joe Kukla sliced a ball into the right field corner for an RBI double, scoring Buckley.  A batter later, Colin Janison picked up his team-leading 16th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to center.

Beloit answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs on four hits, chasing Dominican's Tyler Brown from the game.  Brown lasted 2.1 innings, surrendering eight runs, six earned, on six hits and three walks.

Medin Milla took over on the mound for Brown, hanging five zeros after escaping the third after allowing a pair of inherited runners to score in addition to an earned run of his own.  Milla surrendered just two hits and one walk after the third.

Milla's effectiveness on the mound allowed the Stars' offense a chance to chip away, plating three runs before running out of outs.

Buckley finished 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles and an RBI.  Kukla added a pair of hits as Dominican's offense managed nine hits but stranded eight runners in the loss.

David Harrison picked up the win for the Buccaneers, improving to 2-2 with five innings, surrendering five runs on five hits and three walks.  Later, Keith Haina picked up the save, tossing a 1-2-3 ninth.

Dominican will look to bounce back on Friday, taking on Concordia College (MN) at 11am at Lee Pfund Field before closing out the Round Robin with the host Thunder at 2pm.
