The Dominican University softball team climbed back to .500 (5-5) in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) and 11-15 overall with a doubleheader sweep of the Lakeland University Muskies on Thursday afternoon at the Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont.
The Stars picked up 14 hits and scored six runs in the doubleheader while Dominican's pitchers surrendered just two runs on ten hits and three walks while striking out 14 in the winning effort.
Cat Klostermann tossed a complete-game shutout, her second of the season, to pace the Stars in game one. The sophomore right-hander allowed just three hits and two walks while punching out eight as the Stars picked up a 3-0 win.
Dominican's bats staked Klostermann to an early lead, roping back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first to score the game's first run.
Sydney Kuderna led off the inning with a ground rule double down the left field line and then scored when
Marissa Burns doubled down the left field line. The Stars added a run in the bottom of the second when
Jacadi Rivera singled to left to score
Katie Fredrick.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, Rivera led off the inning with a double to the gap in left-center. Kuderna followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners. Burns then pushed across Rivera when she grounded out, picking up her second RBI of the ballgame.
Kuderna and Rivera were perfect at the plate in game one as Dominican picked up eight hits in the win. Kuderna went 3-for-3 with a double and run scored out of the leadoff spot while Rivera finished 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and a run batted in.
Game two saw the Muskies rally for two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead before Klostermann led off the bottom of the inning with a double to left-center and later scored when
Ali Woitovich bounced into a fielder's choice to knot the game at 2-2. After a scoreless seventh, Burns led off the bottom of the eighth with a bunt single and then scored a batter later when Klostermann laid down a sacrifice bunt but an errant throw by the Muskies allowed Burns to come all the way around to score the game-winning run.
Kuderna got the game two start in the circle for Dominican, lasting five-plus innings before being lifted in the top of the sixth after Lakeland took a 2-1 lead. Klostermann then came on to work the final three innings, limiting the Muskies to just three baserunners over the final three innings. With the wins, Klostermann improves to 6-8 with a 2.51 earned run average.
At the plate, Klostermann led the charge, picking up two hits, including a double.
The Stars will look to carry some momentum into a rescheduled conference series on Friday, taking the short trip down Division Street to meet the Concordia University Chicago Cougars. First pitch in the NACC series is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
