Stars Walk Off To Salvage Split

The Dominican University softball team snapped a seven-game losing streak as Cat Klostermann lined an RBI single to left, scoring Jacadi Rivera to lift the Stars to a 4-3 win over the Benedictine University Eagles on Monday evening at the Ballpark in Rosemont.  The win helped Dominican salvage a split with the Eagles after the Stars dropped game one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) twin bill, 11-0.

Sydney Kuderna picked up the win in the circle and went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a one-out single that was part of a two-run rally for the Stars in the last of the seventh.  Kuderna improves to 3-4 with the win, surrendering just three runs on seven hits and two walks while tossing her second complete-game of the season.

Dominican scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.  Kuderna started the rally with a leadoff single up the middle.  After a flyout, Klostermann doubled to left with Kuderna coming all the way around to score.  A batter later, Klostermann was able to cross the plate on a sac fly by Ali Woitovich

The Eagles got one run back in the top of the fourth and then pulled in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth but Dominican escaped further damage when CJ Mardirosian gunned down a runner trying to steal second to end the fifth.

Kuderna allowed just one base runner the rest of the way, keeping the Stars within striking distance.

Hannah Gordon drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the seventh for the Stars and was lifted for a pinch runner. Katie Fredrick, taking over on the bases, was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cecilia Winters McCarthy before Kuderna laced a single to center to put runners at the corners.  Marissa Burns tied the game at 3-3 with a single to right, setting the table for the Klostermann walk-off single.  Falling behind in the count 1-2, Klostermann fouled off three pitches to work to a 3-2 count before driving a single down the left field line to allow the winning run to score.

The Stars, now 7-11 on the season and 1-3 in league play, will travel to Concordia University Wisconsin for a NACC doubleheader on Saturday before taking on the MSOE Raiders in Milwaukee on Sunday.
