The Dominican University men's tennis team scored a 5-4 victory over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Thursday afternoon at the Stars' home courts in Forest Park, Illinois. With the win the Stars improve to 6-5 on the season and 4-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The Stars now sit in third place in the NACC standings heading into the final weekend of regular season play.
"Today was a very exciting match that went down to the wire," said Troy Tonsil, the Stars' head men's and women's tennis coach. "There was a great deal of composure, patience and focus we played with today. We needed to keep that focus throughout the match.
Josh Sapnu grew up today as a player. He held serve to help get a crucial win for number three doubles and it was his ace that sealed the third set in his sixth singles match, giving us the win for the day. This win puts us in a great position heading into the final weekend. We need to finish strong and gear up towards postseason play."
Sapnu teamed with
Antonio Morales at the Stars' third doubles flight, scoring a 9-7 win for Dominican's lone point in doubles play. The freshman then scored Dominican's final point of the match, topping Wisconsin Lutheran's Grant Fleming at number six singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
John Mysz,
Tarik Abdullah and
Frank Lally helped secure the win with wins at numbers one, four and five singles respectively.
On Saturday, the Stars head into Wisconsin, meeting Marian University in the morning before closing out the regular season at Edgewood on Saturday afternoon.
