The Dominican University men's volleyball team, ranked seventh in this week's AVCA Men's Division III Poll, saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on Friday night, falling to the Marian University Sabres (30-28, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22) in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
"Kudos to Marian," said Dan Pawlikowski, the Stars' first-year head coach. "They defended their home court and capitalized on every opportunity they had. The Sabres played with the same type of energy we had two days ago. We learned a tough lesson tonight and hopefully can improve in our regular season finale tomorrow."
The Stars hit at a .270 clip in the loss but it was the Marian offense that hit .356 to knock off one of the conference's top teams. While Dominican knocked down 54 kills and committed 20 errors, Marian managed to tally 60 kills while committing just 12 errors. While Dominican managed to serve the Benedictine University Eagles off the court the other night with eight aces, the Stars managed just two aces on Friday night, while committing 17 errors at the serving line.
For the Stars,
Ethan Klosak led the way with 12 kills on 28 attacks while
Zach Sinn and
Jake Sidner added 11 and ten kills apiece.
Jack McGuire ran the offense, collecting 45 assists while notching five kills of his own.
Defensively, the Stars posted seven total blocks and collected 45 digs.
Nick Timreck and McGuire led the effort at the net with three total blocks apiece while Klosak collected a team-high 11 digs for his fourth double-double of the season.
For the Sabres, Aaron Wendels and Jon Smallpage led the upset effort, combining for 37 kills. Wendels knocked down a match-high 20 kills on 50 swings while Smallpage hit .485 with 17 kills on 33 attempts with just one error.
Dominican closes out the regular season on Saturday at Lakeland, needing a win to secure a share of the 2018 NACC regular season crown and the top-seed for the conference tournament. The regular season finale is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
