The Dominican University baseball team capped the 2018 baseball season in dramatic fashion on Friday evening at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium, capturing a 12-9 win over the Edgewood College Eagles on Matt Segovia's three-run with one out in the bottom of the ninth. The blast was the second home run of the day for the Stars' sophomore who belted a solo shot in the Stars' 9-3 loss in game one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) twin bill.
"To end the year with a walk-off home run was a lot of fun," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' head baseball coach. "I'm glad our seniors got a big win in their last game. I am eternally grateful for what the seniors have done for us these last four years. They will be missed."
After dropping the series opener, the Stars found themselves chasing the Eagles in game two, 7-0 after the top of the fourth. The Stars clawed back with three in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the lead. Segovia's double sparked the three-run fourth. After
Mike Piotrowski was hit by a pitch,
Alec Coggins plated Segovia with a single and the Stars took advantage of an Eagles' throwing error to put runners at second and third with just one out. After a passed ball allowed the second run of the inning to score and a strikeout,
Ryan Simak delivered a two-out single to score Coggins and cut the deficit to 7-3 after four.
In the fifth, Segovia drove in
Nathaniel Natividad as the first three hitters of the inning reached for the Stars. After a double-play, the Stars got another two-out run-scoring hit when Piotrowski doubled to left to score
Colin Janison.
Edgewood got a run back in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 8-5 before Dominican scored four runs on four hits and a pair of errors in the bottom of the seventh to pull ahead, 9-8. Piotrowski and Simak both had RBI singles in the frame before Natividad gave Dominican its first lead of the day with a double to left, scoring
Joe Kukla and Simak.
A sacrifice fly for the Eagles in the top of the eighth evened the game, setting up the late-game heroics for Segovia.
Freshman left-hander
George Sherman pitched around a leadoff single in the top of the ninth before Kukla opened the last of the ninth with a single off the end of the bat, the second hit of the ballgame for the senior. Natividad worked a four-pitch walk before Janison rolled into a fielder's choice for the first out the inning, putting runners at the corners. Connor Schatzberg's first pitch to Segovia was blasted to deep left-center for the sixth home run of the season for the second-year shortstop and tying Segovia for the Stars' single-season mark.
Sherman picked up the win, improving to 4-6 on the season, tossing two innings in relief of senior
Tyler Brown. Sherman allowed just one run on three hits over the final two innings while striking out two. Brown, making his final start for the Stars, gutted through seven innings, allowing eight runs on 13 hits and three walks while striking out seven.
With the split for the day, the Stars close out the season at 17-19 overall, going 6-14 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
