Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stars Edged By Sabres

The Dominican University men's basketball team came up short against the Marian University Sabres, 74-72, on Thursday night in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  The Stars erased a 14-point second half deficit, taking late 69-66 lead before the Sabres outscored Dominican 8-3 over the game's final three minutes.

"I thought that the team competed hard tonight," said Mark White, the Stars' head men's basketball coach. "We fought our way back into the game and put ourselves in a position to win. Unfortunately, we had some key breakdowns the last couple of minutes of the game."

After the Sabres used a 7-0 run to go up 73-69, Isaac Moore converted an and-one to pull the Stars within one, 73-72 with 0:48 to play.  After the Sabres converted on the front-end of two free throws, the Stars had the ball with a chance to tie or win the game but could not get off a shot in the final seconds.

Dominican shot 52-percent from the field in the losing effort, including connecting on ten of 22 attempts from three-point distance.  Moore led all scorers, pouring in a game-high 23 points on 8-for-10 shooting, hitting four of six three-pointers.  Dennis Handy added 15 points while Braquan Echols came off the Dominican bench to score 12 points in 12 minutes.

The Stars held a 32-27 advantage on the boards but committed 15 turnovers that led to 15 points for the Sabres.

Marian shot just over 47-percent from the field, including going 11-for-21 from three, but managed to convert on just 13 of 21 attempts from the foul line.  Kelvin Jones led the way for the Sabres, scoring 14 points off the Marian bench.  Tavaris McCullough and Trentin Fouse added 12 apiece while Tyrese Pinson rounded out four in double-figures scoring with ten points.

The loss drops Dominican to 2-9 on the season, 2-4 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.  The Stars will travel down Division Street on Saturday to take on the Concordia Chicago Cougars in a River Forest Rivalry matchup.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
