The Dominican University women's volleyball team got back on track Friday evening, rolling through the Alverno College Inferno in three sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) to improve to 16-6 overall and 5-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
Â
"It was good to get back on the winning track," commented
Cameron Andrew, the Stars' second-year head coach. "It's always tough to go into an opponent's gym and get a win, so I'm happy we were able to take care of business. We weren't quite as effective or consistent as I would have liked tonight, but for stretches we played some really good volleyball. It is nice to have tomorrow to get back in the gym to work on few things to keep the ball rolling on Sunday."
Â
Keely McCallum paced the offense with nine kills as the Stars hit .212 in the winning effort.
Emily Mahoney and
Ola Magiera added seven kills apiece as
Anastasia Labadessa (20 assists) and
Natalie Jones (12 assists) utilized ten different attackers throughout the night.
Â
Defensively, the Stars slowed the Inferno attack to a .054 attack percentage by keeping the ball from hitting the floor. Dominican's defense allowed just 21 kills while collecting 49 digs and posting four blocks.Â
Gillian Jones and
Lauren LaVigne led the back row effort with 12 and ten digs respectively while McCallum added three total blocks (one solo and two block assists) for an 11.0 point night.
Â
The Stars will be back in action on Sunday, hosting the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks and Olivet College Comets for a tri-match. Dominican will take on the Scarlet Hawks at 10:00 a.m. in a NACC matchup before hosting the Comets at 3:00 p.m. to cap the day.  The Scarlet Hawks and Comets will square off at the Igini Sports Forum at 12:30 p.m.
