The Dominican University men's soccer team remained perfect in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, topping the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, 4-1, to move to 10-0-0 in league play and 14-2-2 overall. The win sets the stage for the NACC's top two teams to meet on the final day of the regular season when Dominican travels to Aurora University on Wednesday, October 30, with the NACC regular season title and top seed in the conference tournament on the line.
"This was another wild game today," commented
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head men's soccer coach, when asked about the 4-1 win that saw five cautions, including a straight red, a penalty kick and Dominican hitting three posts. "We made it difficult on ourselves in the first half but pulled it together and finished it off with a nice second half. We can take some time to rest tomorrow but will get back to work Monday, preparing for the game that will determine the conference regular season on Wednesday night."
Vicente Castro staked the Stars to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes of play. The freshman's first tally came in just the sixth minute when he got on the end of
Isaac Perez's corner kick service at the back post for a header goal. Castro then netted the eventual game-winner just seven minutes later in the 13
th minute, slipping behind the Falcons' back line on a through ball played by
Nick Kowalczyk.
The Falcons pulled within 2-1 in the 19
th minute on a free kick goal just outside the 18-yard box when Jackson Dryden found the upper-90 on the near side, curling a shot over the Dominican wall. However, the Falcons took a straight red less than ten seconds later and were forced to play a man down the rest of the match.
The score remained 2-1 into the second half when
Josh Prindle found the back of the goal for the first time this season, knocking in a shot after Perez centered to
Jonathan Hernandez who poked a pass for Prindle on the back side for the goal. Perez, Dominican's leading scorer on the year, then added an insurance tally, his 16
th of the season in the 77
th minute when Hernandez got off a shot that was saved by Concordia Wisconsin's Nate Yeager but deflected to Perez who finished it off for his fourth point of the afternoon.
Perez's four-point match is the latest in a stretch of amazing play for the senior. The senior has scored at least one goal in each of Dominican's last nine matches dating back to September 28. During that stretch, Perez has scored 12 goals and collected six assists. For the year, the Elgin native boasts a league-best 41 points on 16 goals and nine assists.
