The Dominican University women's volleyball team played their way into the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament with a four-set (23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-20) win at Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday afternoon. Dominican improves to 21-6 on the season and 8-3 in the NACC, guaranteeing a finish in the top six in the league standings with one regular season match to play.
"This team really showed some great resilience today," commented
Cameron Andrew, the Stars' head coach, following his team's win. "We struggled to get much going early in the first set but then we put together a push at the end and that momentum we were able to carry over into set two. Once we found our groove we knew we were going to be in a place to be successful. I wasn't always pretty, but we found ways to get it done."
The Stars hit .154 in the winning effort but more importantly set the tone at the serving line, serving up ten aces and keeping the host Warriors on their heels and out of system all match. The aggressive nature at the serving line coupled with a defense that collected 72 digs and posted six total blocks, slowed the Warriors to a .105 hitting percentage.
Gabija Sinickaite paced the attack with 17 kills on 38 attack attempts, hitting .263 for the match. Freshman
Keely McCallum added eight kills while
Anastasia Labadessa doled out a team-best 23 assists and rounded out a double-double with 12 digs.
At the serving line,
Sarah Lychock and
Lauren LaVigne collected four aces apiece while
Gillian Jones and
Madeline Morrow picked up one ace each.
Defensively, the Stars were paced by Lychock who collected 20 digs while Jones finished the match with 19. At the net, McCallum was in on five of the Stars' six blocks with one solo block and four block assists. Sinickiate was also in on four assisted blocks, finishing the match with a total of 19 points.
The Stars will close out the conference regular season on Wednesday, hosting the NACC-frontrunning Aurora University Spartans for a 7:00 p.m. match. With a win, the Stars secure a NACC Tournament home match on Tuesday, November 5.
"We put ourselves in a bit of a tough spot early in conference play when we started out 1-2," continued Andrew. "We've gone 7-1 since then and will have a chance on Wednesday to earn ourselves a home quarterfinal. That is a huge accomplishment."
