The Dominican University men's soccer team overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to pick up a 5-2 win over the Marian University Sabres on the road Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Stars to 8-2-2 on the season, winning their fifth straight, and a perfect 4-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
After
Vicente Castro leveled the score in the score in the 57
th minute, the Stars came out of a weather delay to score the game's final three goals.
Jonathan Hernandez scored the game-winner when he flicked a header inside the back post for his sixth tally of the season. Hernandez added an insurance tally in the 81
st minute before
Nicolo Vitale put the bow on the win with his second goal of the season when he headed home a corner from
Isaac Perez.
Perez had the Stars' lone first half strike, giving the Stars a 1-0 advantage in the 13
th minute of play before the Sabres scored twice in the final 15 minutes of the opening half to open a 2-1 lead at the break.
"I thought we started well today but we took our foot off the gas pedal," said
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach in his 25
th season. "We lost our shutout streak which is disappointing but we had that coming in the way we've been playing and approaching games lately. We made things way too difficult on ourselves. Being down at the half was unacceptable. We are fortunate that we found some desire in the second half. Castro really set the tone for us in the final third. The guys fed off his passion and it led to the four second half goals we scored."
The Stars dominated the stat sheet, getting off 33 shots to the Sabres five. Dominican put 13 shots on goal while Marian's lone two shots on frame ended up in the back of the game. Dominican earned 12 corners while allowing just three corner kicks Marian.
The Stars return to River Forest for a Wednesday afternoon tilt with the MSOE Raiders at Dominican's West Campus Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
