Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stars Take Down Falcons

The Dominican University women's basketball team, off to the program's best start since transitioning to NCAA Division III in 2000, continued to change the narrative, knocking off the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, 72-60, improving to 4-0 on the season and snapping a 20-game losing streak to the Falcons dating back to 2004.

"For a conference opener, to beat a team with the winning tradition that CUW has, is huge for our program," commented Dominican's second-year head coach Amanda Parker. "We made timely plays down the stretch that created separation after they had fought back, allowing us to come out with the hard-fought win.  We have a lot of work ahead of us, but this team is headed in the right direction and I couldn't be more proud of the poise and fight we showed today."

Dominican used big first and fourth quarters to open and close out the win. The Stars outscored the Falcons 20-8 in the first quarter and then 25-11 in the fourth.

Hannah Currant gave the Stars their largest lead of the first half, 24-11, when the sophomore scored in the paint with 8:19 to play in the second quarter.

The Falcons whittled down the lead over the next, eventually evening the score 47-47 in the final seconds of the third quarter before Kaitlyn Foster gave the visitors their first lead of the evening with a rebound and put-back as time expired in the third.

The teams traded leads over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter until Timiya Ray converted a pair of free throws, giving the Stars a 52-51 lead with six minutes to play and sparking a 13-0 run for the Stars, capped by an Alisha Markley bucket on the break, giving the Stars a 62-51 lead with under three minutes to play and the Stars never looked back.

Markley came off the bench, scoring a team-high 15 points, leading five in double-figures scoring for Dominican.  Ray's night ended with 14 points and nine boards while Alexis Hoskins and Amari Stafford added 12 and 11 points respectively.  Nyema Burns rounded out the Stars' offensive outburst with ten points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field.

The Stars shared the basketball, picking up 16 assists on 25 baskets while turning the ball over a season-low six times.

For the Falcons, Emily Hafemann dropped in a game-high 23 points while Camryn Szolyga finished with an 11-point, ten-rebound double-double.

The Stars will look to improve to 5-0 on the season on Tuesday, taking a break from Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, hosting the Wheaton College Thunder for a non-conference matchup at the Igini Sports Forum.  Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
