The Dominican University men's basketball team slipped back to .500, 2-2, on the season, suffering a 93-80 setback in non-conference action on the road at Eureka College Tuesday night. The host Red Devils scored 30 points at the free throw line, shooting 30-for-36 at the charity stripe.
"We have been struggling all year to be disciplined on the defensive end of the floor," said
Mark White, the Stars' head coach. "Tonight it really hurt us. You cannot go on the road and allow the home team to shoot 36 free throws and expect to win."
After the Stars and Red Devils exchanged the lead four times over the first 12 minutes of play, Eureka used a 19-4 run to open their largest lead of the half, 39-25, with just over 3:30 to play in the half. The Stars managed to whittle the lead down to nine, 45-36, at the break and then scored the first bucket of the second half before Eureka rattled off 12 straight, to open their largest lead of the night, 57-38.
The Stars made a run, cutting the lead down to nine, 87-78, with just over two minutes to play but managed just two points the rest of the way.
Tyler Guest led the Stars, logging his second double-double of the season, with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The junior shot 7-for-16 from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line.
Jackson Smith and
KJ Redfield came off the bench to score 16 and 14 respectively as the Stars' bench scored 45 points on the night.
For the Red Devils, Dakota Bennington dropped in a game-high 26 points. The senior shot 6-for-12 from the field and was a perfect 14-for-14 at the foul line.
