The Dominican University women's soccer team saw its 2019 campaign come to a close on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons 2-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament championship match at West Campus Field. The Stars close the season with 17-3-0 overall record going 11-1-0 in league play to claim the regular season crown.
"Seeing the season come to a close is always tough," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach, following the match. "I thought we did an excellent job executing our game plan and was proud of the effort up and down the field. You hate to be on the short side of the scoreboard in such a hard-fought match, especially in the conference tournament, but we will learn and grow as a program and stay hungry throughout the offseason."
The Stars, the top seed in the conference tournament, got on the board first, scoring in the 34
th minute when
Regan Coxon carried from 10-yards beyond midfield, carrying up the left side before cutting through a few Falcon defenders a whipping a shot with the right foot for the back post that was able to beat Kaeley Sterkel.
The Falcons answered just five minutes later, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 39
th minute on Selena Esten's 21
st goal of the season.
The score remained tied as the team's traded possession throughout the match until a Falcons' counter resulted in a goal by Isabel Downs with an assist by Esten in the 86
th minute of play.
Dominican had a couple of chances to even the score, including a corner in the 88
th minute that Coxon directed just wide of the goal.
The Falcons had a slight 12-9 advantage in shots, 5-4 in shots on goal, but Dominican created five corner kick opportunities without surrendering a single corner to their NACC foe.
"I want to thank our three seniors for what they have done for our program," said Carrillo. "We will be said to see them go but glad to see them at our alumni events in the future. They have been such a big reason for the resurgence of Dominican soccer, playing in four straight conference championship matches."
