Stars Win Shootout At Greenville

The Dominican University men's basketball team scored a program-record 127 points in a 127-114 road win at Greenville University on Tuesday night at the Panthers' H.J. Long Gymnasium. With the win, the Stars improve to 4-5 on the season and continue to navigate their non-conference slate on Friday, hosting the Knox College Prairie Fire for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff at the Igini Sports Forum.

Tyler Guest led six Stars in double-figures scoring with a game-high 27 points on 12-for-16 shooting from the field.  Nick Lavere led a bench effort that scored 56 points with 20 points in 21 minutes while Dennis Handy chipped in 16 points.  Dylan Anderson scored finished with 15 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for one of the Stars' two double-doubles.

Dominican trailed by as many as 14 points in the opening half but closed the period on a 13-1 run, capped by a Lavere three, to angle the Panthers' lead down to one, 60-59, at the break.

Dominican continued the run in the second half, taking just their second lead of the night, 61-60, when Braquan Echols scored two of his eight points for the game on the Stars' opening possession of the second half.  After Guest scored to extend the Dominican lead seconds later, the Panthers scored four quick points to pull back ahead.

The teams continued to trade leads over the next few possessions until Guest completed a three-point play with 17 minutes to play, sparking a 9-2 run that put the Stars ahead 76-71 when Joshua Mercado buried a jumper with 15:29 to play.

The Stars built their lead up to as many as nine on two separate occasions over the next eight minutes but each time the Panthers answered, including using a 9-0 run to even the score, 98-98 with 7:06 to play.

Greenville took a brief 105-103 lead with just over six minutes remaining before a 16-0 Dominican run and 4:42 scoreless drought for the Panthers put the Stars on top, 119-105 and Dominican never looked back.

"This was a really good team win tonight," said Mark White, the Stars' head men's basketball coach. "I was especially pleased with the way we defended—particularly the three-point line which is something we have done well with most of the season."

The Stars shot a season-best 57-percent (53-for-92) from the field in the win, going 3-for-12 from three, and converted on 18 of 24 attempts at the charity stripe.

Dominican also won the battle on the boards, pulling down 60 rebounds to the Panthers 44.  The Stars logged 21 offensive rebounds, scoring 25 second chance points.

The Panthers, led by Sontiago Grady's 20 points, shot just over 42-percent from the field (43-for-11), going 12-for-43 from three-point distance and 16-for-24 at the foul line.
