Stars Hold Off Cougars In Rivalry Matchup

The Dominican University women's basketball team scored a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) victory on Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum, topping the Concordia University Chicago Cougars, 62-51 in a River Forest Rivalry Cup matchup.  Alexis Hoskins logged her seventh double-double of the season, scoring all 11 of her points in the second half, to lead the Stars to the win in front of a raucous crowd.

"We got in some early foul trouble and had to make some adjustments and play different lineups," said Amanda Parker, the Stars' first-year head coach. "Definitely not one of the best games we have played collectively, but we did just enough to squeeze by with the win."

The Cougars scored the first four points of the contest, opening their largest lead of the game before Dominican scored the next four to even the score.  Dominican went on to shoot just 4-for-21 for the first quarter and committed six turnovers but still managed to lead 11-10 at the end of the first.

Dominican added to its lead during the second period, outscoring the Cougars 13-8 in the quarter.  The Stars' set the tone on defense, forcing seven turnovers and limiting the Cougars to just three field goals in the quarter and six total in the first half.

The Cougars made a couple of runs in the third quarter, cutting Dominican's lead down to three on a few occasions, including pulling within 41-38 with 1:22 to play in the quarter when Samantha Bloom knocked down a deep three.

The Stars saw their lead dwindle down to two early in the fourth quarter, 44-42, before using a 14-3 run that spanned nearly seven minutes, opening a 58-45 lead when Hoskins picked Bloom's pocket and then finished a layup on the break.  For the Cougars, Bloom and Kayla Horlacher managed threes in the final minute but the Stars were able to seal the win at the line, going 4-for-4 at the charity stripe in the game's final 13 seconds.

Hoskins finished with a team-high 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.  The junior shot just 2-for-9 from the field but converted on seven of her eight attempts at the foul line.  Timiya Ray added nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Amari Stafford chipped in nine points on 4-for-8 shooting.

For the Cougars, Bloom finished with a game-high 21 points while Crystal Coor added ten points and pulled down a game-high 16 boards.

Dominican, now 14-9 on the season and 10-8 in the NACC, return to action on Monday, hosting the Edgewood College Eagles for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff in league play.
