The Dominican University baseball team dropped the third and final game of a three-game series to the Cornell College Rams on Sunday afternoon at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg, Illinois, falling 14-4 in eight innings. With the loss, the Stars dropped the three game set, 2-1, and fall to 6-8 on the season with the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) season on the horizon with league doubleheaders against Rockford University and MSOE on deck for next Saturday and Sunday, March 30 and 31.
"We ended the weekend on a real disappointing note," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' head baseball coach. "This is not a good way to go into conference play next weekend but all we can do is put our heads down and go back to work."
The Stars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Ryan Simak worked a leadoff walk after falling behind in the count 1-2.
Johnny Condron followed with a bunt single and the pair moved up to second and third on a wild pitch.
Frankie Sessa then brought home Simak when he grounded out to second and Condron came across to score when the Rams committed an error when
Mike Piotrowski hit a come-backer at the pitcher.
The Dominican lead would be short lived as the Rams answered with two in the second and two in the third before chasing freshman right-hander
Trevor Fulmer from the game in the fourth with three more runs.
Dominican answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth when
Kevin Evans grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, scoring
Brandon Diedrich who had started the inning with a leadoff single.
Cornell continued to add to its lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth and four more in the sixth while Dominican managed a run in the bottom of the fifth when
Mason Baker flew out with the bases loaded, scoring Condron.
Over 3.2 innings of work, Fulmer was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs, four earned, on ten hits and two walks.
Seth Hoffman worked two innings, giving up six more runs, only two earned, on six hits and two walks before
Noah Loeffler worked the final 2.1 innings on the mound.
Offensively, the Stars managed six hits, two apiece for Condron and Diedrich.
